Serena Williams is ready to return to competitive tennis in 2019 but admits it will be a tough comeback.
After withdrawing from her fifth Wimbledon last year, the 28-year-old says she is keen to be back on the court sooner rather than later but admits she struggled to return to the big stage.
In September, she was forced to retire against Alona Bondarenko at the Italian Open only 10 months after making her debut at the French Open against Elise Mertens.
‘I think this is a great opportunity for me to get back into tennis where I can have some fun and be really refreshed,’ said the American, according to the New York Times.
‘I always enjoyed returning to competitive play, but the last couple of years I never felt like I got back to the level I had. I always made it through the first few rounds and then kind of faded.
‘Now I have so many young players that are playing, it’s been really hard to get back into the swing. I think it’s great that Tom Brady is bringing all that cool and hip culture to sports by basically putting his hand in the air and shaking hands. It’s very refreshing to see.
‘I know he’s a pretty serious person, but it’s really been a good inspiration for me. It’s cool that he started a really cool trend.’
WhileWilliams’ career has been dogged by injury issues in recent years, the American player believes she is in excellent physical health and will be able to compete at her best in 2019.
