SANTA ANA — After the wind in Southern California prompted evacuation threats, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection issued a “yellow,” or moderate, fire threat. Now, officials are not telling residents they will remain in their buildings as they wait for the threat to go away.
“Some portions of the Santa Ana fire remain active in the Santa Ana foothills,” firefighters say, noting the cause of the blaze’s growth, as of Monday afternoon.
The fire was reported by firefighters at 3 a.m Monday. The fire grew by 24,000 acres over the weekend and threatened more than 20,000 homes and buildings.
A firefighter on Monday checked the front door to a home on the corner of Senter Drive and East Fairmont Street. The home is part of the 590-home Fairmont Canyon and is one of eight structures in the canyon.
An evacuation notice was posted on the door of the home. Fire officials say the fire will not be large enough to cause an evacuation.
Another notice was posted on the door of a home on the corner of South Gavilan Street and East Fairmont Boulevard. The address is the home of one of the people killed in the fire, a Santa Ana County resident, identified as John Baehn. The fire also destroyed several vehicles.
A California Highway Patrol car was also destroyed in the fire.
Three other houses in the home on South Gavilan were threatened with the fire and have been evacuated. No injuries were reported in those houses.
A third home in the canyon was threatened with the fire but is said to be safe. That home has a garage and four bedrooms. An additional garage is also in the canyon.
Two homes in the canyon have a total of eight bedrooms. One home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the other home has three bedrooms.
Three other homes in the canyon have only one bedroom.
Another home in the canyon has a total of 14 rooms.
