5.1 earthquake hits near San Jose, rattling Bay Area
A magnitude-6.1 earthquake rattled some San Jose neighborhoods Friday night and caused panic in neighborhoods where two small craft marinas sit alongside the big bay. The quake hit at 6:18 p.m., sending tremors and swaying the ground in several neighborhoods along the bay, a city official said.
“It was very unusual,” said Mike Stoker, a seismologist for the city of Santa Clara, a city of about 600,000 people sandwiched in between San Francisco and Oakland.
“I haven’t felt anything quite like this,” he said.
The quake hit just minutes later than other temblors recorded in the area this week. An earthquake measuring 4.8 near Santa Cruz rattled a half-hour later in that area, a few miles west of the San Francisco Bay.
